Craniosacral Therapy

What is Craniosacral Therapy? Dr. John Upledger’s CranioSacral therapy – taught by the Upledger Institue –  is a non-invasive, light touch therapy that tries to identify and treat the tension throughout the body to relieve restrictions, pain, and dysfunction to improve overall whole-body health and performance.

The words cranium and sacrum refer to the bones of the body in the head and the pelvis. The craniosacral system is a newly recognized functioning physiological system that contains the bones of the skull, spine and the structures inside it. It is a semi-closed hydraulic system that includes the cerebrospinal fluid and it is intimately related to many other systems, especially to the nervous system, musculoskeletal system, and respiratory system. The craniosacral system provides a base for the development and functional efficiency of the brain and spinal cord from the time of embryonic formation until death and its rhythmic motion can be palpated by trained hands. When this rhythm changes people usually feel pain or disturbed function in their body.

With various assessment techniques, The CranioSacral Therapist globally assesses the entire body to find the center of the problems and with different craniosacral technics treats certain parts of the body to achieve improvement. The treatment itself – as working not just with the musculoskeletal but with the nervous system and fascia – can be a deeply relaxing and enjoyable new experience for children and adults. Among many great effects, like releasing muscle tension and pain, improving circulation, restoring a good craniosacral rhythm, craniosacral therapy may assist to improve internal body awareness that is the base for maintaining our well-being.

Amongst many other issues, CranioSacral Therapy may assist to improve problems after unfortunate incidents, like concussion and traumatic injuries – sport, bicycle, motor vehicle, car accidents, or falls – or many bodily conditions, like musculoskeletal problems, back pain, neck pain, jaw problem, headache, post-surgical dysfunction, and stress.
